G.R. Chase Michael Scholarship- Fall

This scholarship was inspired by special people who influenced a deeper sense of life and living.  Those that have loved and lost as well as those who we admire and strive to be. This scholarship commemorates community college students who are facing single-parenthood, family, friends, love, and loss.
Because sometimes it is hard.  When times are grim, we need to be able to turn to our friends and family to help us through.  And because sometimes we spot greatness in those around us and will ourselves to be better because of those high achievers.  It is within these special circumstances and connections, we are able to persevere.
This scholarship is named for Chase Peterson who was born on December 21, 2008, and passed March 13, 2011.  This precious little auburn-haired boy was filled with amazing joy and love.  His loss has left an impression on the hearts and minds of those who knew him and his family.   We are here to live for him.  We are here to honor him and those who have gone too soon.  We are here to live a life of admiration, praise, glory, achievement, and giving.
This scholarship honors Gordon Reigstad.  The ability to parent and work along with the ability to have fun doing it would not be possible without the amazing support of Gordon and family.  This support is now being passed along to others.
This scholarship would also like to honor the support of friends and family.  Friends and family can inspire others to live a life worth living especially during hard times. We should support each other in sickness or in health, in successes or failures and when we win or lose.  Those circumstances can be life-changing, inspiring and spur on great achievements.
Saint Paul College and community college students are the bedrock of our nation and no one can succeed alone. We can hold steadfast together and can achieve great things.  Anything is possible together.

Jack Riebel Memorial Scholarship- Fall

John Percy Riebel – AKA "Chef Jack" – was proudly born and raised in St. Paul. He discovered his passion for cooking as a teenager and enrolled in culinary school at the St Paul Technical Vocational Institute.
Chef Jack’s restaurant journey began as a 19-year-old prep cook in the brigade of Chef Paul Laubignat at the newly opened Radisson Plaza in Minneapolis. He was next hired as a line cook at Goodfellow’s, Chef Stephen Pyles’s celebrated new American restaurant. During his eight-year tenure, Jack rose to executive sous under Chef Kevin Cullen, cooking multiple James Beard dinners.

Striking out as a co-owner, Chef Jack opened the craft bourbon and barbecue mecca Butcher and the Boar. It quickly became a Minneapolis hotspot, garnering James Beard finalist nods for Best Chef Midwest and Best New Restaurant. Chef Jack returned to his roots with a reboot of St. Paul’s legendary Lexington. With its lovingly restored interiors and unpretentious classic cuisine, Chef Jack’s vision for the Lex is: "a working-class supper club, the kind of place anyone can go and feel special."

Over nearly 40 years in the restaurant industry, Chef Jack fed, mentored, sparred with, and inspired an entire generation of Twin Cities’ food professionals. He was a fixture at charity events such as Share Our Strength’s Taste of the NFL, a Superbowl-week guest on Beat Bobby Flay, and winner of numerous competitions from the Twin City Burger Fest to Minnesota Monthly’s Local Chef Challenge. A lifelong learner, he spent vacations travelling the world to stage in other kitchens and enjoy fine dining with his wife Kathryne. He amassed a cookbook collection of over 500 volumes, donated to St. Paul College.

National Board for Respiratory Care Scholarship- Fall

The National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) is proud to provide scholarships to respiratory care students at Saint Paul College.

The National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) shares your goal of saving and improving lives through excellence in respiratory care. Since 1960, we have been dedicated to advancing the profession through rigorous credentialing examinations and ongoing support for candidates, credentialed practitioners and educators.

Nearly 40,000 candidates test for NBRC credentials each year, seeking to demonstrate how excellence defines them across seven specific areas of respiratory care.

NBRC credentials provide recognition for hard work and dedication to quality. Success brings respect among colleagues and instills a sense of pride in those who earn the NBRC badges of distinction. Why? For the same reason all 49 states regulating the profession recognize NBRC examinations as standards for state licensure: success requires exceptional knowledge and competency. Our NCCA-accredited examinations—which are developed by respiratory care professionals and predictive of job performance—provide the opportunity to prove readiness for excellence in patient care.

Nora Galvin Memorial Healthcare Scholarship- Fall

The Nora Galvin Health Education Scholarship was established by her wife, Jeani Pearson, after Nora’s 2022 death from chronic lymphocytic leukemia. During her illness, Nora came to greatly respect the compassion shown her by the medical professionals she encountered. That is why this scholarship is focused on the practical nursing discipline.

Nora will be remembered for her creativity and wit. She was the fun aunt, teaching her nieces and nephews to eat candy for dinner and jump on beds, earning her the nickname “Aunt No-No”.  She will be fondly recalled for her chef skills which created myriad holiday feasts. Anything from prime rib to citrus brined smoked salmon, Nora was always able to create a fantastic meal. Nora’s generosity and kindness were well known to all who knew her. She was continually the first to pop up to help when someone struggled with a package or a heavy door.

Nora loved to travel and learn about different cultures. She visited countless state parks, attended three different Olympic games, and visited cities from the west to east coasts, the Caribbean Islands to the northern U.S. Her retirement dreams included a driving tour of the east coast from Niagara Falls to Key West.

Nora valued education and lifelong learning.  This scholarship for the Practical Nursing Program is a tribute to Nora’s kindness and love of learning as well as her belief that everyone deserves a helping hand once in awhile.

Scott Runman Memorial Culinary Scholarship- Spring (no funds)

Scott Robert Runman (1980-2020) was born and raised in South Minneapolis. Scott followed his dad’s passion for hospitality and obtained a degree in Culinary Arts from St. Paul College in 2004. He went on to work in kitchens around the world, including the Minneapolis Club, Earth Lodge in Guatemala, and many other restaurants across the country in Minnesota, Florida, and Alaska. His career was cut short when he passed away suddenly following a heart attack on July 4th, 2020 at just 39 years old.

Scott was especially invested in those who had a disadvantage due to adversity or injustice. He loved history. Throughout his life and his travels across the globe, Scott educated himself about the history of discrimination and oppression throughout our world. He spoke often of the historical injustices that made it a challenge for Native Americans, Hispanics and so many others in the world to pursue their dreams. His most recent focus was on the compassion he felt for the Black community in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. His heart broke in the wake of the George Floyd murder and the social unrest in the city he loved so much. He often wished aloud that he could somehow make a difference for these disadvantaged groups of people. Scott was passionate about giving all people a chance, no matter their situation or background, and did what he could to provide opportunities for many.

Sima Z. Savin Endowed Scholarship- Fall

16258

Sima Ziblat Savin was the second of five daughters in an immigrant Eastern European family of six children.  She was the first in her family to receive a four-year high school diploma and though she was a top student in her high school class, her family could not afford for her to go to college.  While working as a legal secretary at a Chicago law firm, a lawyer recognized her ability and suggested, somewhat jokingly, that she become a lawyer.  At that time it was still possible to go to law school withough a college degree, and she took advantage of this opportunity to move from legal secretary to lawyer.  She began evening law school at Chicago-Kent College of Law while still working full-time as a legal secretary and graduated in 1938 as the only woman in her class, an honors graduate and a class officer.

Shortly after her graduation, she began work as a lawyer for the United States Office of Price Administration.  After marrying and having four children, she worked for many years as an editor on social security law for Commerce Clearing House, a legal publisher.  She died at home in St. Paul, Minnesota in 2006.  To her regret, she never was able to obtain a college degree.

Sima's family established this scholarship to honor her memory, and to help first-generation college students at Saint Paul College achieve their academic and career goals.
